Some Arvon Courses at the Hurst

The Rhythms of Walking
May 22nd – May 29th 2017
The Hurst, Shropshire

For the Romantic poets, walking was an inseparable part of creativity. They shared ideas on walks, they found inspiration from the landscape and the people they encountered, and they trod the rhythms of their poetry across some of the most beautiful parts of Europe. In this tutored retreat of intensive walking, writing and reading poetry we’ll examine how walking can inspire and shape poetic creativity. Our daily walks will take us into the extraordinary and ancient Shropshire landscape where we can put some of our new ideas into practice. Our one-to-one tutorials will allow you to get detailed feedback on your writing.

Serious play
May 29th – Jun 03rd 2017
The Hurst

Do you keep writing the same poem over and over again? During this week we will experiment with form and content to provoke work that helps us escape our habitual idioms and find a fresh perspective. In a bid to shake things up, we’ll engage in some serious play, writing in response to music, art, dance and other poetries. There’ll be plenty of space to engage in collaborations with other writers or solitary writing, depending on what’s working for you. Come prepared to write as many new perspectives as your imagination can take.

Talkin’ Bob Dylan weekend

From John Lindley:

A couple of bits of news with regard to the Talkin’ Bob Dylan weekend that I am running for HF Holidays from 10th – 13th February next year:

1) I learned from HF about a month ago that initial bookings have been sufficient to guarantee that this holiday will definitely be going ahead.

2) For any of you currently considering this holiday, you may wish to take advantage of the fact that there is an early booking discount (of £20, I believe) that will last until 31st December.

Here’s what the holiday brochure has to say:

Explore the work of Bob Dylan with our knowledgeable leader using films, recordings, handouts and discussion. Learn about the craftsmanship, dedication and eclecticism of a brilliant wordsmith and performer, whether you’re a Bob Dylan scholar or a casual fan or are simply curious as to why a singer/songwriter is deemed worthy to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Holiday Highlights:

  • Appreciation sessions every morning, late afternoon and evening
  • Afternoons are free to explore the local area
  • Enjoy the company of like-minded enthusiasts

Great Reasons to Join Us

  • Great value: all prices include Full Board en-suite accommodation and expert tuition
  • Accommodation: enjoy high quality accommodation and excellent food at Longmynd House
  • Expert leaders: our leaders are expert in their field and will ensure that you get the most from your holiday
  • Sociability: we pride ourselves on the social atmosphere of our holidays – listen to music together, eat together and relax together

With regard to the afternoons, I should add here that, although this isn’t a ‘music-making’ holiday, those of you who might enjoy the possibility of an impromptu singaround of Dylan songs during your free afternoons  may like to bring an acoustic instrument . This is not part of the holiday’s itinerary and there’s no pressure to join in, but it’s an add-on for anyone who wishes to participate.

If you’re interested, please see HF Holidays website (below) with details of how to book.

Once you’ve copied and pasted the site into your Search Engine there are a number of sites that, when clicked on, will tell you more about your stay.

HF Holidays phone number is:  020 8732 1250.

I’ve been to the hotel in Church Stretton before and the accommodation and food are superb. A beautiful area to explore in your free afternoons too. All that and music and film of Bob Dylan. Hey, what’s not to like?

I’d be grateful too if you feel like forwarding this email to anyone who you think might have an interest.

Hope you can join me. We’ll have fun!

Writing To Make Change Happen

Writing To Make Change Happen

Mon 30 Jan 2017 to Sat 4 Feb 2017

Writing is often sought as an escape and an entertainment: so how do we forge a narrative that is not afraid to communicate hard truths and helps people thrive in difficult times?

This residential course examines the role of the writer in working collaboratively within a context of ecological and social crises. The planetary challenges we currently face demand that we question many of the individualist myths of our culture and start imagining a future that honours the perspectives of everyone.

We will explore how to listen to different voices (human and non-human), how to inspire and catalyse new stories, how to sustain a writing practice in times of urgency, how to bear witness and write on behalf of others and reclaim a traditional role for writers within the community as truth-tellers, record keepers and agents of change.

Bradford Poetry Foundation

Bradford Poetry Foundation                                          16/08/2016

We are a new charity set up to provide creative writing tuition and mentoring for writers at all stages of their writing careers. We will be based at the Kala Sangam Centre in Bradford. (See flier attached.)

On Friday 19th. Aug. Ed Reiss is holding a poetry workshop and reading at the Kala Sangam and we wish to invite you to attend. The session will be free and a great opportunity to do some interesting writing and for you to read some of your work. At that time there will be representatives from The Department of Culture, Media and Sport fresh up from London with a view to funding Arts in Bradford. (need I say more). We want them to see an active arts community here. There is a fine café in the centre and I hope it will be a very enjoyable time for all. If you know of anyone who would be interested and who won’t see this doc., please pass on the info.

Best regards, Frank Brindle.
